A little about Broughton-in-Furness and the area
Broughton-in-Furness dates back to the eleventh century with its oldest buildings dating back to Saxon times. Although smaller than many villages Broughton is a "Charter Town". The Charter to hold markets was granted in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I with the Lord of the Manor being charged with the duty of maintaining law and order at the fair and markets. Every year on the 1st August the Charter and Charge is proclaimed from the obelisk in the square, and it is tradition that locals congregate at the Old Kings Head for a free gift of drink and food to mark the occasion.
The appeal of Broughton Is that it is still a ‘living working town'. Located in a conservation area within the Lake District National Park, it serves a large rural community where farming is still the mainstay of the economy. It is pleasantly quiet and unspoiled making it an outstanding walking centre, yet there are fascinating attractions to explore near by.
Broughton is the ideal base for a walking holiday but many other activities are also close at hand. Quiet local roads and mountain hiking tracks make it an ideal area for cyclists to explore. Horse riders too will enjoy the peaceful lanes. There are two tennis courts and for the golfers there are two courses very close to Broughton.
